Kentucky's 2026 nursing license renewal closes at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and that same moment is the cutoff for this year's continuing education. If you hold a Kentucky APRN license, you have about ten days to renew, finish your pharmacology hours, and make sure your national certification on file is current. Kentucky has no grace period.
This is an NP-facing briefing, not legal advice. Everything below comes from the Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN). If anything here differs from what KBN tells you directly, KBN wins.
The dates that matter
- Renewal window: September 15 through 11:59 p.m. EDT on October 31, 2026, through your KBN Nurse Portal account.
- CE earning period: November 1, 2025 through October 31, 2026. Hours earned outside that window don't count toward this year.
- Office hours: KBN encourages nurses to finish before 4:30 p.m. EDT on Friday, October 30, when its office closes for the weekend, so staff can still help if something goes wrong.
- If you're reporting a conviction, discipline, or an open investigation: KBN asks for the required documents by close of business on October 28 so the license doesn't expire while they're reviewed.
No grace period, and what a lapse means
KBN's 2026 APRN/RN combined renewal instructions are blunt: a license that isn't renewed by the deadline lapses immediately. You can't practice on it until it's reinstated, and working on a lapsed license is a violation of Kentucky nursing law even if you've already filed for reinstatement. KBN says reinstatement can take roughly two to three months.
Submitting the application also isn't the same as being renewed. Your license isn't renewed until all requirements are met and KBN has processed it. After paying, select Finish to return to the Nurse Portal, because that step links your payment to the application. You'll get a confirmation in your Nurse Portal Message Center once it's processed.
APRN continuing education for this cycle
Per KBN's APRN continuing education page:
- Every APRN: at least 5 contact hours of pharmacology between November 1 and October 31.
- APRNs with a DEA registration and a KASPER account (Kentucky's prescription drug monitoring program): at least 3 of those 5 pharmacology hours must be in pain management or addiction disorders.
- APRNs authorized to certify patients for medicinal cannabis: an additional 3 contact hours each year covering diagnosing qualifying conditions, treating them with medicinal cannabis, cannabis pharmacology and drug interactions, and indications of cannabis use disorder.
- Your RN license: KBN says an APRN's national certification meets the 14-contact-hour CE requirement for the RN license.
What counts as pharmacology
KBN says pharmacology content must include drug-specific information, safe prescribing, safe medication administration, prescribing methods, new regulations, or similar topics. The course needs identified pharmacology objectives, and a casual mention of medications doesn't qualify. Your certificate should show the specific pharmacology hours awarded. KBN also accepts pharmacology-related CME credits if the provider is recognized by your national certifying body, such as AANP or ANCC.
Approved providers and certificates
Hours must come from a provider approved to offer nursing CE by KBN, another state board of nursing, or one of the national nursing organizations KBN recognizes. Each certificate should show your name, the course title, the completion date, the contact hours (and pharmacology hours where required), the provider, and who approved the provider.
You attest at renewal; you prove it at audit
You don't have to finish CE before you submit your renewal, and you don't upload proof to renew. When you select Finish, you're attesting that you have met, or will meet, the CE requirements by 11:59 p.m. EDT on October 31. Uploading CE to the Nurse Portal (Manage Profile, then Continuing Education) is optional, but if you're picked for KBN's CE audit you'll have to upload everything then. KBN says to keep CE records for five years.
Check your national certification
KBN's instructions flag this one specifically for APRNs: if the national certification KBN has on file expires before October 31, 2026, update it and upload your current certification document, either under Manage Profile, then National Certification, or during the renewal application. If you don't, your renewed APRN license may lapse.
Fees
According to KBN's Summer 2026 KBN Connection, renewal is $65 for the RN license and $55 for each APRN role designation, and it lists a combined APRN and RN renewal at $120. Fees aren't refundable, so review your answers before you pay.
What to do this week
1. Sign in to the KBN Nurse Portal now and confirm you can get in. Fix any email or password problem today, not on the 31st. 2. Count your pharmacology hours earned since November 1, 2025. If you're DEA-registered with a KASPER account, confirm at least 3 are pain management or addiction disorders. 3. If you certify for medicinal cannabis, confirm your additional 3 hours. 4. Check that your national certification on file runs past October 31, 2026, and upload a current copy if it doesn't. 5. Renew and pay, select Finish, and save your confirmation. 6. File every CE certificate somewhere you'll find it in five years.
